BET Awards

Even though the awards may not have lived up to some of the moments from the past, it is understandable given that the show was almost completely changed in the span of 3 or 4 days due to the passing of Michael Jackson. Of corse that was the focus all night and Jamie Foxx did all he could to celebrate the life of the greatest pop icon ever.

There were also many other tributes throughout the rest of the night. Here is New Edition’s and Ciara’s tribute to MJ.

The rest of the night was filled with performances by Young Money, T-Pain and Jamie Foxx, Keisha Cole and Monica, Keri Hilson, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and others. No performances were very mind-blowing, but with Michael Jackson as the focus of the show, the tribute itself was a success.

DJ Premier’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

DJ Primo, the best DJ-producer ever, recently released his tribute to MJ. You definitely want to download this gem. Thank me later. Personal highlight of the mix: I love the Paul Mooney MJ bit from his standup that Primo used to intro the mixtape! Classic Paul Mooney!

Michael Jackson Music Sales Through the Roof

Following the same trend that happens when other famous artists pass away (i.e. The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur), record sales for the late pop icon Michael Jackson have gone through the roof. According to numerous reports, people all over the world have been buying up all of Michael’s music digitally, and the old fashioned way of going out to stores and actually interacting with people! Stores like Best Buy have completely sold out of albums like the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller, having to resort to back order. This just proves that he truly is the most important pop icon of…….well pretty much ever.

Bill Carr, vice president of music and video at Amazon says, “This is simply unprecedented.” In addition to the legendary Thriller album, Amazon is also out of all Jackson and Jackson 5 albums.

“We’ve seen the death of Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra and many other artists, but none of them compare to what we’re witnessing today,” Carr added.

I myself can’t believe the impact that this pop icon had on the world. Even after his career was pretty much over, at least in my eyes, he was still number 1 in the hearts of music fans all over. Michael Jackson’s untimely death has reminded everyone that you never really appreciate what you have till it’s gone, which is clearly why the whole world is in a frenzy trying to buy up the late legend’s extensive catalogue of music.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Michael_jackson_bad_cd_cover_1987_cdda

Yesterday took everybody by surprise. The King of Pop was confirmed dead after going into cardiac arrest. Even with all of the allegations and sometimes questionable behavior, it is fair to say that Michael Jackson definitely touched all of us in one way or another. He changed music, regardless of genre, forever and there will never be another like him. Enjoy the videos below as we celebrate Michael Jackson, the legend.

De La Soul x UNDRCRWN

Lately UNDRCRWN has been on point, dropping some ill gear like the Tribe Called Quest and Asher Roth collections (click the link for the pics). They recently collaborated with De La Soul, who needs no introduction, on a tee shirt that features a caricature of the 3 emcees from Amityville. Cop the shirt and rock em with your De La Highs or Lows.

The Legendary Roots Crew

Last night on the “hit or miss” (but usually miss) Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the house band, The Roots, performed the title track off their forthcoming album How I Got Over which is slated to release in October. The song has that classic, funky Roots feel to it and even features GOD emcee Black Thought rapping and singing! And if you wanna see more live Roots action, their next Jam Session at the Highline Ballroom is Wednesday, July 1st!

Danny MacAskill! HOLY $H!T

“This dude is like Rodney Mullen on a bike!!!” – Lil Jen

Ok so I was just put on to this 5 minutes ago from my homie Lil Jen. Check this dude out man. Danny MacASkill is a “stunt cyclist” (I know, I’ve never heard of that either) from Scotland who back in April released a youtube video of all the sick lines that he had footage of. Apparently he’s been riding for more than decade and from watching his video, it definitely shows. This dude is extremely crazy and talented. WATCH THE WHOLE THING! Oh and props to Danny for using the Band of Horses song, “The Funeral.” Dope.

FLIGHT CLUB SOHO

This past weekend, Flight Club, the famous consignment boutique for rare kicks, just opened up it’s THIRD location right in SOHO. That’s right 3rd! I guess business for Flight Club has been doing well…….I know I haven’t contributed to any of that because I don’t have guap to spend on overpriced kicks……..BUT this location is a little bit different from the other two because this one looks a lot more like a vintage gear head’s closet, not only displaying rare kicks but old school gear as well. As you can see from the pictures, everything from POLO dating back to the 90’s to SUPREME box tees to OG NINTENDOS! can be found on Flight Club SOHO’s racks and cases, and surprisingly the gear isn’t as over priced as you would expect it to be. Definitely worth checking out. But I would avoid going on the weekends! That’s when the tourists take over SOHO…..I can just imagine how packed it will get in that place.
